2008 Annual Meeting

Pre-Convention Events

The 23rd Annual Joint Conference on Concerns of Minorities and Women

The Joint Conference on Concerns of Minorities and Women will be held at the Hilton Washington Hotel, in Washington DC, on June 28 and 29, 2008, prior to the NEA Representative Assembly (RA). Participation in the Joint Conference is limited to 800 pre-registered members who are delegates to the 2008 RA and 100 pre-registered members who are non-delegates. Delegate status will be verified. As in previous years, there will be no on-site registration.

Registration materials will be mailed by the last week in March. The early registration fee for both delegates and non-delegates is $110.00 if postmarked by May 5, 2008. Registration after May 5, 2008 will be $135.00. RA delegates attending the Joint Conference will receive a two-night stay (double occupancy) at the Hilton Washington Hotel for the nights of June 27 and 28. Non-delegate members must pay for their own room, and payment must be received with the registration form. No one will be able to call the hotel directly to make reservations. ALL reservations must be made through NEA Human and Civil Rights.

The Annual NEA Student Leadership Conference

Conference participants will stay at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel. Student members will learn more about the Association and get ready to recruit new members in the Fall.

Plan for the following events:

  • June 26th - Opening session, Awards Dinner and keynote (6 pm - 9:30 pm)
  • June 27th - Outreach to Teach (6 am - 4:30 pm)
  • June 28th - General and Breakout Sessions, Voting (all day)
  • June 29th – Breakout Sessions and conference wrap up (8:00 am -11:30 pm)

The 42nd Annual Human and Civil Rights Awards Dinner

The 2008 Human and Civil Rights Awards Dinner will be held on July 2, 2008 at the Washington DC Convention Center in the Grand Ballroom.

This dinner represents the National Education Association - American Teachers Association merger and honors our colleagues' achievements, celebrates all our multicultural roots, introduces us to the leaders of the human rights struggle, and recharges us for the struggle ahead.

Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis until May 19, 2008, or until sold out. This year, the cost is $65.00 per ticket or $650 per table of 10. No tickets will be mailed. Tickets will be distributed at the Joint Conference on Concerns of Minorities and Women on June 28-29 for individuals and states (scheduled at the Hilton Washington Hotel), at the meeting of convention coordinators for states, at the Awards Dinner ticket booth at the Washington DC Convention Center on June 30, July 1 and until noon on July 2 only, and at the "will call" desk at the Washington DC Convention Center Grand Ballroom.  If you have not received a registration packet/ticket order form, for more information, please call NEA Human and Civil Rights at (202) 822-7709.

NEA-Retired 2008 Annual Meeting

The 2008 NEA-Retired Annual Meeting will mark the 25th Anniversary of NEA-Retired. NEA-Retired will celebrate this milestone with a special reception on Friday June 27th and honor those who help make NEA-Retired what it is today. The Annual Meeting will be held June 27-29, 2008 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel located at 1331 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C., 20004, (202) 393-2000 or 1-(800) 228-9290. The hotel is located adjacent to the National Theatre, two blocks from the White House, four blocks from the National Mall, and a 10 minute ride from the Washington Convention Center.

The first general session will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 27th and the last session will conclude the Sunday evening, June 29th. There will also be an orientation for new delegates and a review of election procedures at 2:00 p.m. on Friday June 27th. This year’s Annual Meeting Theme is NEA-Retired: "Celebrating 25 Years of Dedicated Service in the NEA Family." Members and delegates wishing to participate in the NEA Student Program "Outreach to Teach" Project should arrive by Thursday June 26th.

Official delegates to the NEA-Retired Annual Meeting with full voting rights for all elections are those NEA-Retired members elected from their State Association as delegates to the NEA RA. However, all NEA-Retired members and pre-Retired Subscribers are welcome and encouraged to attend the meeting (as non-delegates), as well as attend the informational workshops that will be conducted. Non-delegates are not eligible to vote for NEA-Retired officers but may vote on NEA-Retired New Business.

During the two and one-half day Annual Meeting, awards will be given for Membership Growth, Best Newsletters, Best Websites, NEA-Retired Distinguished Service Award, and the NEA-Retired/Jack Kinnaman Scholarship Award to worthy NEA Student members. There will be also an equal opportunity for all NEA RA attendees to win the 2008 NEA-Retired T-shirt Quilt. Be sure to stop by the NEA-Retired booth at the RA. Remember, donations go to support Children and Public Education!

The NEA-Retired Annual Banquet will be held Saturday evening, June 28th. A cocktail reception will begin at 6:30 pm and dinner will begin at 7:00 p.m. The dinner will be followed by a live auction benefiting NEA's Fund for Children and Public Education. The Jazz combo Steve Wolf & Swing Speak has been confirmed as the evening’s entertainment. The cost of the Annual Meeting banquet is $65 per person. You may purchase a banquet online when you register for the annual meeting. Banquet tickets will not be sold onsite. Tickets must be picked up at the Annual Meeting registration desk during conference registration times, which will be made available at another date. If you have questions, you may contact NEA-Retired at (202) 822-7149. NEA-Retired will also invite NEA Student members to an Intergenerational Dance after the Banquet. So plan to stay and party until midnight.

Annual Meeting registration is an online process at www.nea.org/retired, and information can be found in "This Active Life" magazine’s March and May 2008 issues. The Annual Meeting registration deadline is June 4, 2008. Uniserv Referral Center

As a service to our state and local affiliates, NEA will maintain the UniServ Referral Center prior to the 2008 Representative Assembly. The Center will be located in room 208 A/B of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and will provide the following services to both members and state affiliates:

  • Sessions will be offered in creating effective resumes, completing applications accurately, and developing excellent interviewing skills.
  • Information sessions on the Affirmative Action Intern and Pre-Employment Development Programs will be offered.
  • State and local representatives will be able to meet with interested members to further explore employment opportunities.

Applicant Profile Forms will be available for individuals interested in applying for UniServ staff employment. The Referral Center will be open on Tuesday, July 1 through Thursday, July 3, at which time applications will be accepted.  Operating hours are as follows:

  • Tuesday, July 1:         9 am – 5 pm
  • Wednesday, July 2:    9 am – 5 pm
  • Thursday, July 3:        9 am – 11 am

A schedule of presentations and sessions will be posted daily in the Referral Center.  The Referral Center staff will provide space for the daily sessions as well as for discussions between interested members and state affiliates. State and local affiliates may use the Referral Center for conducting interviews for employment vacancies during the Referral Center's operating hours.

The Referral Center will close promptly at the start of the Representative Assembly. NEA will coordinate the collection and distribution of Applicant Profile Forms; however, NEA accepts no liability and offers no assurance of employment.

National Council for Higher Education

The Representative Assembly meetings of the NCHE will meet at the following dates and times:

  • Tuesday    July 1    4-5:45 PM
  • Thursday  July 3    9:30-10:45 AM
  • Friday       July 4    Lunch break
  • Saturday   July 5    Lunch break
  • Sunday      July 6    Lunch break

All NCHE members and higher education delegates are welcome. On-site NCHE memberships are available. The July 1st & 3rd meetings are critical. We are looking forward to seeing all higher education NEA delegates.Questions should be addressed to NCHE@nea.org.
