NEA's Books Across America
The Nea Foundation, in collaboration with the National Education Association, will make $1,000 awards to public schools serving economically disadvantaged students to purchase books for school libraries. The awards are made possible with support from individuals who donated to the NEA's Books Across America fund to bring the gift of reading to students. Help Replenish Public School Libraries—Donate to NEA's Books Across America
Now that NEA's Books Across America is helping school libraries around the nation, you may have the opportunity to help a school library in your neighborhood and educate your community about the importance of school libraries. Think of creative ways to raise funds. Whether it's a challenge you make to your local shopping mall, a bake sale in your back yard, or a "run for reading race," your efforts, big and small, will help this worthy cause. Here's how you can help:
A Gift of Reading to the Gulf Coast
From the moment NEA launched NEA's Books Across America along the Gulf Coast, NEA members and partners have risen to the challenge of helping their peers along the Gulf Coast region. In 2006, NEA members contributed 350,000 books and raised $125,000 for school libraries. More than 500 NEA member schools from 47 states "adopted" schools or classrooms in the Gulf Coast region, raising funds and gathering books. BAA partners, The Heart of America Foundation and First Book, continue to travel throughout the region, delivering books and providing support for schools, and NEA members continue to lend a helping hand, making sure the region is not forgotten.
After a successful launch with a Cat-A-Van tour of the Gulf Coast and a concentration on school libraries in the ravaged Gulf Coast region in 2006, NEA's Books Across America went national, raising funds for school libraries in need around the country. Please join our efforts and help us put new books on the shelves in public schools nationwide.
