WASHINGTON - National Education Association President Lily Eskelsen García released the following statement in reaction to the House passage of H.J. Res. 76 to overturn the U.S. Department of Education’s revised 2019 Borrower Defense to Repayment rule, pursuant to the Congressional Review Act.
“Today’s bipartisan rebuke of Betsy DeVos is good for students and shows once again just how out of touch her agenda is with all Americans. The DeVos rule punishes students who were the victims of fraud, undercutting the protections for student borrowers who were lured in by predatory lenders with false promises and deceptive advertising. It punishes students when their school closes before they could graduate. The DeVos rule is especially cruel considering that those who are most vulnerable to targeting by these predatory institutions include veterans, older students, students of color, disabled students, and students who are the first in their families to attend college. This bill is the right step toward protecting these students and the Senate should swiftly follow the House’s lead and pass this legislation.”
