Educators endorse Elizabeth Warren for the U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON - The National Education Association’s Political Action Committee, the NEA Fund, today endorsed Elizabeth Warren for the U.S. Senate. Election experts are predicting the Massachusetts Senate race between Democrat Elizabeth Warren and Republican Senator Scott Brown will be one of the most closely watched races this year. Control of the U.S. Senate could be at stake.

“Educators are proud to endorse Elizabeth Warren for the U.S. Senate,” said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. “If elected, she will set the right priorities for Americans—an economy that works for all, not just a chosen few and more opportunities for those who work hard and play by the rules. As an educator, Ms. Warren understands that the road to economic prosperity runs directly through our nation’s public schools. She will stand up to Wall Street and provide a much-needed voice for hard-working Americans.”

 “I’m honored to receive the endorsement of educators,” said Elizabeth Warren. “Education is at the core of investing in our future and building a strong middle class.  For years, I have worked to level the playing field for middle class families, and I will continue the fight to ensure that students and teachers have the tools they need to succeed here in Massachusetts and across the nation.”

Before Warren attended law school and embarked on a career as a law professor and member of the faculty at Harvard University, she worked at a public elementary school in New Jersey, teaching special needs students. Having a U.S. Senator with a teaching background, Massachusetts Teachers Association President Paul Toner said, will be a huge benefit to educators, education support professionals, faculty and staff working in public schools and colleges across the Commonwealth.

“Elizabeth Warren has the right values and vision to stand up for educators and students in Congress,” Toner said. “She understands the issues facing teachers because she was one. Elizabeth Warren recognizes just how important good teachers are to the future of our families, communities, and our country and she will fight to create new opportunities for all of our students from preschool to graduate school.”

Today’s endorsement from the NEA Fund is based on the work of the MTA’s Candidate Recommendation Committee. In January, members of the MTA committee interviewed three candidates running for the Senate seat and recommended Elizabeth Warren to the NEA Fund. The NEA Fund, the NEA’s national political action committee, provides direct financial support to recommended candidates for president, the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate who will fight to support teachers, staff and students and improve public education. MTA represents 110,000 teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff.
