Washington—The Biden administration today unveiled a robust and urgent plan aimed at undoing the damage caused by the Trump administration to the nation’s immigration system and to reverse by Executive Order the most damning, cruel and inhumane policies, and delivering on a promise that President Joe Biden to made on the campaign trail.
The following statement can be attributed to NEA President Becky Pringle:
“America’s strength comes from our diverse and vibrant population made up of people from all backgrounds and races. Despite the pandemic, the economic crisis, and deliberate barriers put in place to keep Black, brown, young, and new Americans from voting, we came together in record numbers to choose new leaders and, now, we expect them to deliver on their promises and to govern for all of us.
“That there is finally a true partner in the White House who will listen, value ideas, and act in the best interest of students and educators is due largely to the educators who mobilized like never before and the advocates, families, and the voters who came together to demand the future we deserve, a future that works for all of us – no exceptions.
“The Biden administration’s smart and humane approach to immigration will not only undo the Trump Administration’s chaotic and cruel policies, but will set a course for a fair and functional immigration system that centers human dignity and community wellbeing.
“Immigrant families, with the courage and tenacity to move for a better life, help make our country the ‘land of the free, home of the brave.’ The cornerstones of the Biden plan, which include lifting the Muslim travel ban, extending protections to DACA recipients—including an estimated 15,000 educators, their students and families—and offering an eight-year path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and keeping families together, will start to undo the damage the Trump administration left behind. Together, we can make the immigration process reliable, safe and just.
“With deeds and actions on day one, the Biden administration is showing their commitment to immigrant families and our communities by moving with urgency on these critical issues. We urge Congress to do the same. Together, we can make this country where all of us can thrive.”
