WASHINGTON - The Trump administration unleashed its Immigration and Customs Enforcement on a 10-year-old with cerebral palsy. Rosa Maria Hernandez came to the United States when she was just three months old. Federal agents detained her after her emergency surgery at a hospital in Corpus Christi. She currently sits alone in a detention shelter in San Antonio.
“The arrest of a 10-year-old with cerebral palsy is beyond reprehensible, it is repugnant. It shows how morally corrupt the Trump administration has become. Sadly, this is just the latest in a series of racist, inhumane, ruthless anti-immigrant attacks on those who arrive to America seeking safety, freedom, and opportunity. This is not the America we know. This is not who we are.
“As the Trump administration threatens our values and our way of life, educators will stand to protect the rights of everyone in our communities, including the most vulnerable among us.
“We call for the immediate release of Rosa Maria Hernandez so that she can be with her family where she belongs instead of sitting in a detention center. We also call on the Trump administration to put an immediate stop to these racist, abhorrent, reckless and hateful attacks on our neighbors, friends, and, yes, our students.
