WASHINGTON — The National Education Association PAC Council, representing the broad array of educators and other professionals who make up our union including leaders from all 50 states and NEA caucuses, passed the following resolution pledging that NEA will work to hold accountable the members of Congress who voted to continue the undermining of our democracy, promoting false and divisive conspiracy theories, as they tried to overturn the November 2020 election.

The resolution, which specifically halts PAC contributions to the members of Congress who voted against certifying the results of the election, was passed unanimously by the PAC Council. The full text reads as follows:

PAC COUNCIL RESOLUTION

PUBLIC STATEMENT ON ACCOUNTABILITY TO OUR DEMOCRACY

WHEREAS, with the horrific attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, we witnessed the impact of continued promulgation of lies and divisive actions and rhetoric by some members of Congress; and

WHEREAS, these lies were efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential election, and were focused on areas with high proportions of voters of color; and

WHEREAS, even after the raid on the Capitol, large numbers of legislators voted to continue the undermining of our democracy, promoting false and divisive conspiracy theories, as they tried to overturn the November 2020 election; and

WHEREAS, one week later we witnessed the second impeachment of a sitting President;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that NEA shall issue the following public statement on behalf of the PAC Council:

The NEA PAC Council, made up of NEA leaders from across the nation, condemns the members of Congress who voted to overturn the election by denying the recognition of legally cast votes with the intent of overturning the will of the people. Those actions fundamentally endangered our democracy hours after the attempted insurrection that was incited by Donald Trump. The members of Congress who supported those efforts need to be held accountable. The NEA has halted PAC contributions to any of those representatives for the remainder of the 117th Congress and will hold these members of Congress accountable for their attempts to undermine our democracy.
