WASHINGTON—The U.S. Senate today confirmed former GOP Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Labor Secretary.
The following statement can be attributed to NEA President Becky Pringle:
“Across America, most of us want the same things—strong public schools to help every student grow into their full brilliance and good jobs where workers earn living wages to provide for their families. During her time in Congress, Lori Chavez-DeRemer listened to, stood with, and advocated for working families, public schools, and union rights.
“Her record stands in stark contrast to Donald Trump’s anti-worker, anti-union record. Already, the Trump administration is gutting workplace protections, diminishing the voice of working people, and attacking collective bargaining rights—including making our country less safe by unilaterally ending collective bargaining rights for transportation security officers. Trump tried to illegally fire a member of the National Labor Relations Board, along with Department of Labor employees who ensure Americans are paid fairly, have safe working conditions, and help people with disabilities find meaningful employment.
“As Secretary Chavez-DeRemer takes office, America’s educators and working families hope she will continue building on her pro-worker, pro-student record rather than implementing an agenda that only benefits billionaires such as Elon Musk.”
