Disability rights are fundamental human and civil rights.

At NEA, we believe that all individuals with disabilities—both visible and non-apparent—are entitled to the protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

AWARENESS

  • Raise awareness of and familiarize yourself with Disability Etiquette. Avoid the use of labels and ableist language (i.e. SPED students, special needs, cr@zy, l@me).
  • Uplift broader issues of disability rights, including the rights of educators to receive reasonable accommodations in the workplace.

ADVOCACY

  • Advocate for people with disabilities to be present in conversations and decision-making related to education policies and practices.

ACTION

  • Prioritize inclusion and provide all necessary accommodations for students with disabilities, so they can fully participate and reach their potential in the classroom and beyond.
  • Identify and remedy physical, attitudinal, and implicit barriers to accessibility that could exclude or marginalize people with disabilities from full participation and success.
