Urge your senators and representative to extend the Secure Rural Schools program
Almost 20% of America’s students attend rural public schools. But these students and their educators are often forced to make do with far less than they need.
Students may lack up-to-date textbooks. Their school buildings, which serve as community gathering places, are often old and dilapidated. Educators lack the resources to provide the broad curriculum and extracurricular activities that inspire students’ imaginations and desire to learn.
The Secure Rural Schools (SRS) program provides funding not only for public schools, but for other public services in rural areas. The last authorized payments under SRS were distributed in the spring of 2024. A bipartisan, bicameral bill (S. 356/H.R. 1383) would extend this crucial program.
