Since the beginning of the pandemic, the federal government has enacted rescue legislation providing unprecedented levels of support for education. While these rescue funds have been vital in pandemic recovery, they have also supported so many important initiatives in schools across the country. Knowing that rescue funds will be exhausted by 2024, existing federal grants must be utilized and reimagined to continue the great work that has started. Below is a round up of federal grant programs, categorized by issue area, that can support various initiatives that are important to educators across the country.

Assessment Audits

Through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, reauthorized as the Every Student Succeeds Act, there are many Title funding sources that can be used for assessment audits. These funding sources provide states and districts the opportunity to reduce testing; maintain effective protections to preserve students' civil rights to ensure assessments are fair; and maximize the positive impact of transparent, consistent information about student success and progress.

School-Based Mental Health Services

There are federal grants available from various agencies that support mental health services and programs within a school context. These grants can be used to increase the number of school counselors, expand school health clinics, financial support for students in Ed.S programs, telehealth, and a variety of other vital supports for students.

Teacher Residency Programs

The Department of Education offers a variety of grant opportunities that can support the development and operation of teacher residency programs. The idea behind teacher residencies is that they offer intensive support to teachers throughout the beginning of their journey as educators, which helps reduce the churn so often seen within the first five years when teachers leave because they feel overwhelmed and isolated. These grants allow for states to adopt this opportunity and address the educator shortage.

Workforce Diversity

The Department of Education offers a variety of federal grants which can be used for programs and initiatives which support workforce diversity in schools and districts. These include initiatives such as recruitment and retention efforts for educators of color, Grow Your Own programs, tuition reimbursement, and teacher residency programs.
