‘Never Give Up!’: A message from NEA-Retired President Sarah Borgman

To ensure financial fairness, retirees need to lobby, speak up, and speak out.

Right now some of us are looking outside and seeing snow! For me, winter is a reminder that the legislative session here in Indiana is in full swing. That often spells disaster. For nine years, we’ve struggled to get a COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) in our pension checks, and for nine years we have been left out in the cold! When you face a legislator and they don’t even know what you are talking about—or worse, why you need a COLA—you know you have a real teaching assignment ahead of you! Nevertheless, my colleagues and I will try again!

Retirees in your state may be battling a different issue. But keep fighting! Pensions, skyrocketing prescription and insurance costs, and protection of Medicare and Social Security are not political issues. They are our issues. So, lobby, speak up, and speak out. And when you get tired, remember the words of Winston Churchill: “Never, never, never give up!”

Let’s also support today’s students and active educators. They await funding that will pave the way toward smaller class sizes and modern technology. They want to spend more time truly learning, not just preparing for the next test. And just like their teachers, students need mentors who will help to ensure ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) delivers real results. Through it all, we must reach out to new and early career teachers and education support professionals. They need assistance and guidance from the very best. That, my friends, is you!

Finally, join us in Chicago March 16 to 19 for the NEA National Leadership Summit, which includes an NEA-Retired Leadership segment. The gathering is a valuable opportunity for us to share ideas and sharpen our leadership skills. I look forward to seeing you there. Meanwhile, let’s move forward—together!
