A Spring Focused on Survival

Editor's Note from the June 2020 issue of NEA Today.
Published: June 1, 2020

You made it. You have come through one of the most challenging school years in history—all while keeping your personal life afloat under the threat of coronavirus. You may have become an overnight expert in remote learning or put your own health on the line to sanitize schools or deliver food to students who desperately need it.

In “Our Heroes,” we celebrate you—your fortitude, your optimism, your creativity, and your unwavering love for your students, which shines through especially in the most difficult of times.

In “The Distance-Learning Challenge,” we hear from members about the hurdles and inspiration they encountered as they pivoted to remote teaching in a matter of weeks—what worked, what didn’t, and what this could mean for the future of public education.

As you navigate these uncharted waters, NEA is with you. In “Even When Schools Close, Unions Work for You,” we highlight how NEA and state and local affiliates have been working hard for the health, safety, and continued learning of educators and students.

With kids online more than ever, internet safety has become an even more pressing concern. In “Help Block the Hate,” we recommend tips for keeping kids safe from predators and hate while using computers at school.

And, in “Welcome to WellVille,” we offer some lighter fare. Before the pandemic struck, a school on Long Island, N.Y., created a spa-like wellness room where educators can unplug during breaks.

Speaking of wellness, now that this incredibly trying school year is drawing to a close, we encourage you to take care of your physical and mental well-being in “Make Time for You This Summer.” No one could deserve it more. You are all our heroes.
