A Time Like No Other: A message from NEA-Retired President Sarah Borgman

Our NEA-Retired family pulled together during the pandemic and will remain united as we focus on the work ahead.

As an association and a nation, we have experienced a historic event like none we’ve ever seen, but with the love of our members, friends, and family, we have fought the good fight. Every one of us was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in some way. Thank you for your love, thoughts, and prayers for one another, for our students, and for our nation. May God continue to bless our nation as we move forward in the work that lies ahead.

So, what does one do when isolated? I cleaned cupboards and closets, read from a BIG stack of books I’d collected, and enjoyed listening to my great-grandson read to me over the phone. Some of my colleagues made phone calls; others baked and delivered. President of Michigan Education Association-Retired, Kay Walker, sent her own version of “Cabin-Fever,” a cheery, daily email.

Even as we face a pandemic and its aftermath, there are tasks we must attend to now. We need to get behind Joe Biden—the Democratic presidential front-runner recommended by both the NEA PAC Council and the NEA Board of Directors. There is much to do, including making calls and sending emails; ensuring that citizens are registered to vote and can get to the polls; making contributions to the NEA Fund for Children and Public Education, and more. Don’t be idle! Get involved!

NEA-Retired is also focusing on membership recruitment, asking our colleagues to belong to the greatest union in America. “Each one, ask one” has always been a great way to grow. Will YOU get at least one more member? We are NEA-Retired, and we are needed NOW more than ever!
