Confirm Karla Campbell’s nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit

Her extensive experience in labor and employment law is in short supply on the federal bench, especially in the appellate courts whose decisions impact the lives of all Americans.
Submitted on: September 18, 2024

United States Senate
Washington, DC 20010

Dear Senator:

On behalf of our 3 million members and the 50 million students they serve, we urge you to VOTE YES on Karla Campbell’s nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Votes on this issue may be included in NEA’s Report Card for the 118th Congress.

Ms. Campbell has devoted her legal career to representing workers and labor unions. During her long career at the firm of Stranch, Jennings & Garvey in Knoxville, Tenn., she represented employees, unions, pension plans, and immigrants in precedent-setting matters involving workplace safety, fair wages, access to benefits, and more. An expert in the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), she brought several successful cases against employers who withheld or failed to make proper contributions to employee benefit plans. She was also part of a team that brought a class action lawsuit on behalf of incarcerated people who were denied proper treatment for Hepatitis C.

Her pursuit of equal justice is informed by personal experience. After earning her bachelor’s degree at the University of Virginia, Ms. Campbell spent nearly three years with the Peace Corps in Ecuador, and then enrolled in Georgetown University Law Center. Immediately after graduating, she worked at a law firm and as an international affairs specialist for the U.S. Department of the Interior. She subsequently clerked for Judge Jane Branstetter Stranch of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, whose seat she is now nominated to fill.

Ms. Campbell’s extensive experience in labor and employment law is in short supply on the federal bench, especially in the appellate courts entrusted with interpreting laws and issuing decisions that impact the lives of all Americans. We urge you to VOTE YES when her nomination comes to the floor.

Sincerely,

Marc Egan
