NEA Urges Senate to Ratify Equal Rights Amendment

The amendment was first introduced a century ago. It is long overdue.
Submitted on: April 26, 2023

U.S. Senate

Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator:

On behalf of our 3 million members and the 50 million students they serve, we urge you to VOTE YES on the resolution to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Votes on this issue may be included in NEA’s Report Card for the 118th Congress.

The Equal Rights Amendment was first introduced in Congress a century ago, and its passage is long overdue. At present, the Constitution explicitly guarantees women only one right: the right to vote.

The Equal Rights Amendment would:

  • Guarantee equality for women under the Constitution
  • Ban discrimination on the basis of sex in the workplace
  • Help women achieve pay equality and allow men to get paid paternity leave
  • Require states to intervene in cases of domestic violence and sexual harassment
  • Guard against discrimination based on pregnancy and motherhood
  • Potentially bolster protections for gay and transgender people

This legislation is particularly significant for the educators of NEA, the majority of whom are women. We all deserve the full protections of the Constitution and a guarantee that our rights may not be abridged or denied on the basis of sex. Please VOTE YES on the Equal Rights Amendment.

Sincerely,

Marc Egan
