My biggest concern right now is that our schools are chronically underfunded and, in many ways, still segregated. Something has to change. A student's zip code shouldn't be a predictor of the quality of education they receive. All of our students deserve the absolute best public education. It's time for our nation to shift its priorities because the future of our students depends on it.
The best, most equitable public school that I can imagine would be the fully funded school that our students deserve. Poverty is decriminalized and all kids have access to meals regardless of their parent's ability to pay. All educators and support staff are paid a professional wage.
It would be a school where the diversity of the students is represented in the diversity of the staff. Counselors, nurses, social workers, and librarians are on staff at all times. We will stop whitewashing history and ensure that BIPOC individuals are centered at the forefront of the curriculum. Ethnic studies will be a requirement for graduation. Educators will make a commitment to anti-racist practices and the school-to-prison pipeline becomes a thing of the past. All of these things are attainable if we put students, not billionaires, first.
