Context

When We Unite, We Win

Together with parents and allies, we have the power to defeat the effort to dismantle our public schools. We will stop a handful of anti-public education politicians who support an agenda that will have devastating consequences for our students, families, and educators. Our union has stopped attacks on public education before, and we stopped voucher proposals at the ballot box in November.

This guide is designed to help you spread the word about the movement to protect our students, public schools, and each other, as well as the actions we can take to stand up for students, educators, and our communities.

Speak Out for Public Schools

Speak Out for Public Schools

The following message guidance is designed to help you talk about the movement to protect public schools in a way that reaches and mobilizes your audience. This guidance includes:

  • Key talking points
  • Messaging do’s and don’ts
  • Sample campaign copy

Key Talking Points

Every student deserves opportunity, resources, and support to reach their full potential no matter where they live, the color of their skin, or how much their family earns. Public schools and the Department of Education exist because students, with and without disabilities, in every state and neighborhood have the right to an education that imparts academic lessons, life skills, and a lifelong love of learning.
Educators and parents know that America's students need more opportunities to succeed, and we need to strengthen our public schools where 90% of students— and 95% of students with disabilities—learn. All students benefit from programs run by the Department of Education, especially lower-income students and their families in rural, suburban, and urban communities, students and families who qualify for federal grants or loans to receive career training or attend 2- and 4-year colleges, and students with disabilities.
Together with parents and allies, we have the power to defeat the effort to dismantle our public schools. We will stop a handful of anti-public education politicians who support an agenda that will have devastating consequences for our students, families, and educators. Our union stopped Trump’s cuts before, and we stopped voucher proposals at the ballot box in November.

Messaging Do's and Don'ts

Do
Put faces and names on issues, including sharing the cost for students, educators, and communities when public education and related support are gutted.
Don't
Just share a laundry list of programs and institutions that are at risk.
Because
Many people don’t connect the dots between policies and the impact they have on our students, educators, and communities. Pell Grants, IDEA, and Title I are popular because they help people succeed. When we start with the people and how policies impact them, it is easier to connect our fight to the concrete impact in our own backyards.
Do
Be aspirational. Remind audiences of our values and what we know is possible for our children through public schools.
Don't
Succumb to hopelessness. It’s important to share the news, but we want to ensure we don’t overwhelm people rather than inspiring them to act.
Because
It is easy to feel powerless, but when we unite, we win. These threats have happened before, and we have successfully beaten them back. We are excited to protect public schools so we can realize our shared vision for the future of public education.
Do
Name and place the burden of responsibility on the leaders who must choose to either help or harm public schools when they vote on budgets and policies.
Don't
Forget to name the larger why: Our schools are being targeted to fund another tax cut for billionaires and their friends.
Because
Contextualizing the threats against public education places the burden of responsibility on those in power and delegitimizes billionaires who seek profit over policies that benefit our communities.

90% of American students— and 95% of students with disabilities—learn in public schools. Together, we will stop a handful of anti-public education politicians who support an agenda that will have devastating consequences for our students, families, and educators.

  • They want to dramatically cut funding that helps lower class sizes, give learning support and opportunities to students with disabilities, and provide free and reduced-cost meals to hungry kids so they can learn by dismantling the U.S. Department of Education.
  • They want to cut funding for Pell grants, which help students afford colleges and career schools, and trade schools.
  • They want to expand school voucher programs that will take scarce money out of our public schools where 90% of children attend.

Tell your Senators to vote NO on Linda McMahon!

Not only is Linda McMahon unqualified to run the U.S. Department of Education, but she has also spent years pushing policies that would defund and destroy public schools—much like Betsy DeVos, the Secretary of Education during Donald Trump’s first term.

Share these tools to help us pressure elected officials to vote no on Linda McMahon’s confirmation as Secretary of Education.

Key Talking Points

Every student deserves opportunity, resources, and support to reach their full potential no matter where they live, the color of their skin, or how much their family earns. Public schools exist in every state and district to provide that opportunity. Confirming Linda McMahon would bring significant harm to that goal.
Linda McMahon’s top goal is a voucher scheme that redirects funds from public schools—which educate 90 percent of our students, including 95 percent of those with disabilities—to private and religious schools that are not accountable to the public. Vouchers weaken public education, especially in rural communities where public schools are the economic center.
Linda McMahon is a billionaire with no significant background in public schools, nor any understanding of what it takes to help students thrive. She spent most of her career as CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, a company accused of shady business practices and abusive treatment of employees.
We are urging our elected leaders to VOTE NO on Linda McMahon for Secretary of Education. Add your voice by texting ACTION to 48744 today!

Protect the Department of Education, Pell Grants, IDEA, and Title I

Anti-education politicians and their billionaire friends want to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education and dramatically cut funding that helps lower class sizes, give learning support and opportunities to students with disabilities, and provide free and reduced-cost meals to hungry kids so they can learn.

Use these tools to inform your networks how important the Department of Education and other federal programs are to students, educators, and families in our communities—including your own. Together we can demand our leaders protect these essential institutions.

Key Talking Points

When the White House talks about dismantling Department of Education programs, it uses phrases such as “back to the states” to obscure the fact that students— especially lower-income students in rural, suburban, and urban communities and students with disabilities—will lose big.
The Department of Education is a critical champion in enforcing federal statutes prohibiting discrimination and ensuring every student has access to an education that will help them reach their full potential. Dismantling it means defunding programs that feed, educate, and protect our most vulnerable and underserved students, and leaving many families fearful and anxious and communities reeling.
Educators and our allies will push back, protecting popular programs that support students, staff, and strong public schools.

Popular Programs

Here are some of the most popular programs supporting students that are at risk if the Department of Education is dismantled.

The Program: Title 1
Title 1 directs money to schools with high concentrations of students living in poverty and provides supports.
The Impact
Support provided through Title 1, such as reading specialists and smaller class sizes, could be decimated if, as proposed in Project 2025, it is turned into block grants and handed over to individual states—without any sort of accountability or oversight. According to an analysis by the Center for American Progress, 180,000 teaching positions could be lost, affecting 2.8 million students in low-income communities.
The Program: Federal Student Aid
The Education Department also administers Federal Student Aid, such as Pell Grants, federal student loans, and loan repayment and forgiveness programs.
The Impact
Thirty percent of U.S. college students rely on these federal loans to pay their tuition. Students and families could lose this support, leading to more students dropping out, fewer choices, and fewer options for families.
The Program: IDEA
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) provides services and support students with disabilities need and deserve.
The Impact
Roughly 7.5 million students, or 15 percent of the student population, receive special education under IDEA, including funding of $15 billion to support students with disabilities. This program could be transferred to another agency, making it significantly less likely that students with disabilities are protected and served to the fullest extent under IDEA.
The Program: Office for Civil Rights
The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights protects students against discrimination based on race, gender, and disability.
The Impact
Many expect the White House to move the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights to the Department of Justice, a move that would severely weaken its ability to protect students against discrimination. The absence of strong federal oversight would leave millions of students vulnerable to discrimination, leading to lower levels of motivation and academic achievement and a higher risk of dropping out.

Hi {{FirstName or 'there'}},

People don’t always realize it, but the federal government and the U.S. Department of Education have a big impact on our everyday lives and on our local public schools.

Funding from the Department of Education helps public schools in [Insert Your State/District] lower class sizes, give learning opportunities to students with disabilities, and provide free or reduced-cost meals so hungry students can learn.

Yet anti-education politicians and their wealthy donors have said they will dismantle the Department of Education and drastically cut funding for public schools.

Nearly 90% of American students attend public schools and harmful actions like these would have far-reaching consequences on our students and families, especially in rural and underserved communities.

Push back on executive overreach

Working families across the country are anxious and angry about the executive branch’s overreaching actions to dismantle public services.

Use these tools to help your networks tell Congress to push back against executive overreach and act like the co-equal branch of government it is!

Key Talking Points

Congress is a co-equal branch of government. Our elected leaders must step forward and do what voters have entrusted them to do: protect us. Stop an agenda that will have devastating consequences for students, educators, and working families by pushing back against the executive branch’s excessive and extreme actions.
No matter who you voted for, the recent executive orders came for all of us—our students, educators, and people in every single community. At a time when our students need us most and when parents and educators are working together tirelessly to do everything we can to support them, this administration continues to take action that aims only to distract and divide us. This unnecessary and punitive executive order does nothing to help educators inspire their students to learn and to give them the resources needed to succeed.
Educators won’t be silent as anti-public education politicians hurt our students, our families, and our communities across America. Together with parents and allies, we will continue to organize, advocate, and mobilize so that all students have well-resourced schools that provide an honest, accurate, and inclusive curriculum that prepares them for the future. If anybody knows how to handle an adversary, it’s educators. And if anybody knows how to mobilize and take action, it’s union members.

Hi {{FirstName or 'there'}},

The Trump administration has issued unprecedented executive orders—many of which are illegal—that seek to consolidate power and sow chaos.

Tell Congress to push back against executive overreach and act like what it is: a co-equal branch of government.

Take Action >>

So far, this anti-education administration has:

  • Promised federal funding for private school vouchers
  • Put student safety at risk by allowing ICE raids in public schools
  • Attempted to cut federal payments for programs like Head Start and school meals
  • Censored educators, preventing an honest education for students

These actions are hurting our communities and, most of all, our students.

Congress is supposed to be a check and balance on the executive branch.

Let your senators and representative know what you think about Trump’s actions. Urge them to do everything in their power to stop the onslaught of relentless and illegal executive branch actions.

It was always their plan to overwhelm and divide Americans by issuing a constant barrage of executive orders. They want us to tune out and give up. But we know better.

The fight for our students, working families, and democracy is just beginning.
