Ensure Vote on GPO/WEP Repeal

In the 118th Congress, a historic number of House members have recognized the need to right this historic wrong.
Submitted on: September 10, 2024

U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative:

On behalf of our 3 million members and the 50 million students they serve, we strongly urge you to sign the discharge petition for H. Res. 1410 to allow for immediate consideration of the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82)—a decades-long, top priority for our members.

H.R. 82 repeals the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) that rob more than 2.8 million retirees all across America, including many educators, of Social Security benefits. They also discourage people from becoming educators—especially those in mid-career, who stand to lose Social Security benefits they have already earned. That, in turn, can adversely affect the quality of the education our students receive.

We thank the historic number of House members who have recognized the need to right this historic wrong and cosponsored H.R. 82 during the 118th Congress. Now, it is time to take the next step: signing the discharge petition to ensure a vote on H.R. 82.

The discharge petition is being filed and opens for signatures TODAY (see attachment). If you have questions, please contact Maggie Ayrea in Rep. Garret Graves’ office, [email protected], or Abigail Holland in Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s office, [email protected].

Please sign the discharge petition today!

Sincerely,

Marc Egan
