U.S. Senate

Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the 3 million members of the National Education Association, who teach and support 50 million students across the country, we urge you to vote to confirm Rachel Bloomekatz to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Votes on this issue may be included in NEA’s Report Card for the 118th Congress.

Ms. Bloomekatz’s faith in the Jewish principle of tikkun olam, “repairing the world,” is reflected in her approach to public service and commitment to equal justice for all. Throughout her career, this principle has guided the work she has chosen to do.

She served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and as an assistant attorney general in Massachusetts, where she argued cases on behalf of the Commonwealth’s state agencies. She worked for some of the nation’s most successful appellate practices before starting her own firm, Bloomekatz Law LLP, where she argues appeals in the Ohio Supreme Court, the Sixth Circuit, and in courts nationwide. Ms. Bloomekatz is also committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of attorneys and is an instructor at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Additionally, her oral arguments are used to teach appellate advocacy at Harvard Law School.

During her career, Ms. Bloomekatz, a graduate of Harvard College and the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law, has taken on several cases that impact children and educators. In Gabbard v. Madison Local School District Board of Education, she successfully represented parents who challenged a school board policy that would allow educators without sufficient training to carry firearms. In State v. Moore¸ she argued successfully before the Ohio Supreme Court that a sentence of 112 years in prison without the possibility of parole violated the constitutional rights of a 15-year-old. Her broad portfolio includes a wide range of issues, including voting rights and consumer protections, and for her pro bono work, she has received awards including the “Children’s Champion Award” from the Children’s Defense Fund.

Rachel Bloomekatz possesses the intellect, experience, qualifications, and compassion to be an outstanding judge. We urge you to vote YES to confirm her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Sincerely,
