U.S. Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator:
On behalf of our 3 million members and the 50 million students they serve, we urge you VOTE YES on Nusrat Choudhury’s nomination to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Votes on this issue may be included in NEA’s Report Card for the 118th Congress.
One of our nation’s leading civil rights attorneys, Ms. Choudhury strives to ensure that the justice system treats all people fairly—regardless of income, education, or geographic location. Throughout her distinguished career, she has challenged discriminatory laws and policies that target communities of color and people who live in poverty. Her professional qualifications and demonstrated commitment to human and civil rights make her an exceptionally good choice for the federal bench.
Since 2020, Ms. Choudbury has been the Roger Pascal Legal Director at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Illinois. Previously, she was deputy director of the national ACLU Racial Justice Program and a staff attorney in the ACLU National Security Project. Her deep litigation experience includes more than two dozen complex cases, almost all in federal courts. Cases in which she has been lead counsel have involved government transparency over public records, federal statutes, and rights protected under the First, Fourth, Sixth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments. She has engaged in high volume motion practice and discovery, advocated in courtrooms, and taken cases to trial.
A graduate of Yale Law School, the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, and Columbia University, Ms. Choudhury clerked for Judge Barrington D. Parker in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and for Judge Denise Cote in the Southern District of New York. Her lived experience would also be an asset to our federal judiciary: She is the daughter of Bangladeshi immigrants and would be the first Muslim woman to serve as an Article III judge.
For all these reasons, we urge you vote to VOTE YES on Nusrat Choudhury’s nomination to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
Sincerely,
Marc Egan
